Frequently asked questions about my handcrafted ceramics

What types of ceramic pieces does Anne Cardin Artiste offer online?

Anne Cardin Artiste offers a wide variety of handcrafted ceramic pieces, made in Quebec at her Studio L’Ancolie workshop. Each creation is produced in small quantities, and many pieces are unique.

The online shop includes mugs, bowls, vases, pots, and planters, as well as practical and original kitchen items such as spoon rests, knife rests, garlic holders, herb peelers, and egg separators.

You will also find ceramic jewelry, sculptures, decorative objects, creations for plants and gardens, and small gift items.

The collections evolve with Anne Cardin's production: some creations are recurring, while others are produced in limited editions or as one-of-a-kind pieces. The style is distinguished by color, patterns, textures, and inspiration drawn from nature.

Are Anne Cardin Artiste's ceramic pieces handmade?

Yes. All the pieces are entirely handmade in her Quebec studio. Depending on the project, Anne Cardin shapes them on the potter's wheel or entirely by hand. When certain shapes require it, she also designs and makes her own molds. There is never any industrial production: each creation is made, decorated, and glazed by hand. Each piece then goes through several stages, including shaping, drying, a first firing, decoration, glazing, and a final firing. This artisanal process ensures that each piece is unique, with its own nuances, textures, and small peculiarities that attest to its authenticity.

How long does it take to make a handmade ceramic mug?

Making a handcrafted ceramic cup usually takes several days to a few weeks, depending on the technique used and the drying and firing stages.

At Anne Cardin Artiste's workshop, each cup is handmade. It may be shaped on a potter's wheel, modeled, or created using more complex techniques that require several steps. Next comes the complete drying of the clay, a first firing, the application of colors, decorations, or glazes, and then a second firing in the kiln.

Some mugs require much more work than others. The patterns, color overlays, engraving, or special techniques used for certain collections can add several steps to the process.

Even though the manual labor time is measured in hours, the complete process often extends over several weeks, because the clay needs to dry slowly and each firing followed by the cooling of the kiln takes time.

It is this long process that makes each handcrafted ceramic cup a unique piece, shaped and decorated by hand in Quebec.

Is each ceramic piece unique?

Yes. Every ceramic piece is unique. Even when Anne Cardin creates a design in multiple copies, no two pieces are exactly alike. Variations in shaping, texture, color, and the natural reactions of the glazes during firing make each creation truly unique. It is these nuances and subtle variations that attest to its authenticity and give handcrafted ceramics their charm.

Where are your ceramic creations manufactured?

All my creations are made in Franklin, Quebec, in my studio, Studio L'Ancolie. It's there that I imagine, shape, decorate, and fire each of my pieces, from the first lump of clay to the finished product. By choosing one of my creations, you are supporting Quebec craftsmanship and entirely handmade production.

Why does a handmade item cost more than an industrially produced one?

A handcrafted ceramic piece requires many hours of work and goes through several stages: design, shaping, drying, two high-temperature firings, decoration, glazing, and finishing. I also use high-quality materials and, when necessary, create my own molds to produce certain shapes. Each piece is made, decorated, and inspected individually, without an assembly line. Therefore, you are not simply buying an object, but a unique, carefully crafted creation that bears the artist's hand and the expertise developed over the years.

Why do some ceramic pieces quickly go out of stock?

I produce my creations in small batches, entirely by hand. Each ceramic piece requires many hours of work and several weeks of preparation, from shaping and drying to firing and finishing. I prioritize quality over quantity and create new collections each season rather than continuously reproducing the same designs. Some creations are also unique pieces or experiments that will never be repeated. When a collection is sold out, it can sometimes take several months before a new one becomes available, if it ever does.

What is the difference between stoneware and earthenware ?

Stoneware and earthenware are two types of ceramics that are distinguished mainly by their composition and firing temperature.

Stoneware is fired at very high temperatures (approximately 2,190 to 2,370°F). This makes it very dense, durable, and low in porosity. It is particularly well-suited for everyday items such as cups, bowls, and plates, as it withstands daily use very well. My stoneware pieces are dishwasher safe.

Earthenware is fired at a lower temperature (approximately 1830 to 2010°F). This allows for vibrant colors and greater creative freedom, but it is more fragile than stoneware. Therefore, I recommend hand-washing earthenware pieces to preserve their beauty.

I use these two materials depending on the desired result. The choice between stoneware and earthenware depends as much on the function of the piece as on the artistic effect I wish to create.

Can your ceramics be put in the dishwasher?

It depends on the collection.

  • These stoneware utility pieces are designed for everyday use and are dishwasher safe. They are fired at high temperatures and coated with food-safe glazes.

  • Earthenware pieces, however, are not dishwasher safe. I recommend gentle hand washing to preserve their beauty and durability.

Decorative pieces should also be cleaned by hand. As with any handcrafted item, gentle care will allow your creations to retain their luster for many years.

Yes. Anne Cardin can create a painting from a photograph, whether it's of a person, an animal, a place, or a particular memory. The photograph then serves as the starting point for the creation.

The goal is not simply to reproduce the photograph exactly. Anne Cardin reinterprets it in her own artistic style, with her colors, textures, and personal way of constructing the image. An old black and white photograph can, for example, become a colorful and contemporary work while retaining the emotion and story of the original moment.

Custom paintings based on photographs are possible, provided the artist is given creative freedom in their own style. Each project is evaluated based on the photograph, the subject matter, and the desired format.

Is it common to buy artwork online and what are the advantages?

With the advent of new communication technologies, buying art online is becoming increasingly common, even for seasoned collectors and investors. To gain recognition and sell their masterpieces, not all artists have the option of a physical gallery. It is now the best way to find an authentic piece of art quickly. Buying artwork online allows you to acquire the piece you desire without having to travel to complete the purchase.
